Capitol as Night Falls

Capitol and Fountain

Living in the capitol of Wisconsin, it is hard to pass this stately building wthout taking a photo now and then. Friday night my Sherpa and I lugged the camera gear to the Isthmus (the Capitol building is on a narrow strip of land between two large urban lakes) where we dallied with dinner at a local brew-pub, then strolled over to the Monona Terrace Roof Garden.

We enjoyed the steady breeze off Lake Monona, and watched the clouds move in, cover the Capitol dome in gray, and then slip away again. Finally the Capitol lights went on and I set up and took a few photographs. She’s a mighty handsome building – this Capitol with the loveliest gold statue of ‘Miss Forward’ standing atop her highest stone.

    Beautiful, Bo.

    Who is “Miss Forward”?

    According to Wikipedia…

“The “Wisconsin” statue on the dome was sculpted by Daniel Chester French of New York in 1920. Her left hand holds a globe with an eagle on it and her right arm is outstretched to symbolize the state motto, “Forward.” She wears a helmet with the state animal, the badger, on top. She is made of hollow bronze covered with gold leaf.

“Wisconsin” is 15 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs three tons. The statue is commonly misidentified as “Lady Forward” or “Miss Forward”, which is the name of another statue on the capitol grounds.”

Now MY comment: I’ve lived in Wisconsin all my adult life and have ALWAYS heard her called Miss Forward, so I don’t know about all that info in Wiki, but thought I’d throw it out for public consumption anyway. 🙂 And I didn’t know she wore a Badger helmet – just like the football team! Wow! LOL

The dome statue is called “Wisconsin” and “Miss Forward” is in the lobby somewhere! I need to go introduce myself and apologize.
